About Hak Ja Han
Known as “The Mother of Peace”, Hak Ja Han and her husband Rev. Sun Myung Moon co-founded the Universal Peace Federation.
Childhood & Early Adulthood
Han was born in a small village in North Korea to a Christian family. When she was five, she was arrested with her mother by communist police and spent 11 days in jail. Upon her release, she fled from her village with her family.
She later joined the Unification Church and married its founder Sun Myung Moon in 1960.
Mother of Peace
After her husband’s passing, she took over the church’s activities in 2012 and focused on her humanitarian efforts, including education and the world’s refugee crisis. Han also founded the SunHak Peace Prize, dedicated to honoring people who work to solve global issues.
Awards & Honorary Degrees
Han has received several honorary doctorate degrees from various universities worldwide. In 2001, she was awarded the Grand Prix Peace Award of UN IAEWP.
