About Hal David
David was a renowned American lyricist who was best known for his contribution to a number of James Bond film themes, including “We Have All the Time in the World”.
Family and Education
He was born and raised in New York City to Gedalier David and Lina Goldberg. He is the brother of Mark David who was an American songwriter. He was educated at New York University.
David married Alice and had two sons with her. After Alice’s death in 1987, he married Eunice Forester.
Career Highlights
He worked with Morty Nevins, who was a member of the American pop group The Three Suns, on songs for the feature film “Two Gals and a Guy”. The movie premiered in 1951 and starred artists like Lionel Stander, Arnold Stang and Janis Paige.
“The Story of My Life” and Other Collaborations with Burt Bucharach
He met the prominent composer Burt Bucharach at Famous Music Corporation in New York. They became a team and produced their first song “The Story of My Life”, which was recorded by Martin Robbins. The song was released in 1957, the same year they met.
A version of their song was recorded in the UK by Michael Holliday and it hit number 1 in the UK Singles Chart. It was recorded as the first time a songwriter has reached that number on the Chart.
The duo wrote other popular songs such as “This Guy’s in Love with You”, “What the World Needs Now Is Love”, “I Say a Little Prayer” and "I’II Never Fall in Love Again".
Awards and Achievements
He, together with Bucharach, received the 2011 Gershwin Prize. Their song “Walk On By” has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
In 2011, he earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
David was selected to the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1984. He was also a member of the board of governors of Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre.
Death
He died from a stroke at age 91 in 2004.
