Harold Rowe Holbrook Jr., simply known as Hal Holbrook, was a celebrated American actor, writer and director best known for his performance as “Mark Twain” in the 1954 one-man show titled, Mark twain Tonight!
Family Life
His father was Harold Rowe Holbrook Sr. and his mother was a vaudeville dancer named Aileen Holbrook. He together with his two older sisters were raised by their grandparents.
He had two children from his marriage with Ruby Elaine Johnstone. He had another child with Carol Eve Rossen, whom he married in 1966 and divorced in 1983. In 1984, he married singer and actress, Dixie Carter.
Achievements
In 1966, he received a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for his performance as Mark Twain.
President George W. Bush honored him with the National Humanities Medal in 2003.
Hal Holbrook earned several Primetime Emmy Awards for his roles in The Bold Ones: The Senator (1971), Pueblo (1973), Sandburg’s Lincoln (1976) and Portrait of America (1988-1989).
He was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 1999.
Trivia
He defended actor, Nate Parker over alleged rape accusations in a letter to The New York Times in 2016.
