About Hal Roach
Hal Roach was an American film producer and founder of Hal Roach Studios. He spent nearly 80 years working in the film industry and is best known for producing classic hits like the “Laurel and Hardy” franchise, and the comedy series “Our Gang.”
Film Career
Roach was an adventurous young man and arrived in Hollywood after spending time in Alaska. In 1912, he appeared as an extra in several silent films. He always thought himself a terrible actor and three years later, he started producing comedies with his friend. Throughout his career, directed silent movie hits, including “Captain Fury”, “Swiss Miss”, “The Housekeeper’s Daughter”, and “One Million B.C.”
Achievements
He received an honorary Academy Award, and the Lifetime Achievement award at the 42nd Berlin International Film Festival.
Spouses and Children
Roach married twice, first to Marguerite Nichols and later to Lucille Prin. He had 6 children. He died in 1992, months after turning 100 years old.
