About Hamilton Hume
Hamilton Hume started exploring new places in Australia when he was 17 years old. In 1817, with Charles Throsby and James Meehan, he discovered Lake Bathurst. The following year, he accompanied John Oxley and James Meehan to reach the Jervis Bay for the first time.
In 1828, he teamed up with other explorers, including British officer Charles Sturt, to discover Australia’s Darling River, which would become the third longest in the country. Four years before that, he joined William Hovell’s team to explore Australia using an overland path to Port Phillip from Sydney.
Personal Life
He was one of the children of Elizabeth Kennedy and Andrew Hamilton Hume. He had a brother named John. In 1825, he tied the knot with Elizabeth Dight, but their union produced no children.
Recognitions
The highway between Melbourne and Sydney has been named after him. In 1994, the City of Hume, which was named after the famous explorer, was formed.
