About Harald Quandt
Herald Quandt was one of the wealthiest German industrialists of the 20th century. He was from the famous, wealthy “Quandt” family that owns a stake in the German car company “BMW” and several other notable companies in Germany.
Background
He was born in Charlottenburg, Germany to famous German industrialist Gunther Quandt and Magdalena Rietschel Behrend. However, his parents divorced in 1929. He was his mother’s only child to survive after she and his step-father killed their six children on May 1, 1945 and committed suicide afterward.
World War II & Education
During World War II, he served as a lieutenant of the “Luftwaffe” and fought in the 1941 “Battle of Crete”. Unfortunately, in 1944, the allied troops captured him in Italy but he was released in late 1947. Then between 1949 and 1953, he read mechanical engineering in Stuttgart and Hanover institutions.
Business Dealings
His father passed away in 1954, leaving the Quandt’s empire jointly to Herald and his stepbrother Herbert Quandt. By then, the Quandt Empire consisted of over 200 companies. It also included large stakes in several German auto companies such as “Daimler-Benz”, “BMW” and “AFA/VARTA.” However, he mainly managed “IWKA” and “Amphicar”.
Death
He sadly died at age 45 after being killed in a plane crash in Cuneo, Italy on September 22, 1967.
