This Automotive Hall of Famer started as a bookkeeper but became one of the most impactful presidents of General Motors. He helped the American manufacturing corporation to become the first in the industry to hit $1 billion in profit in a year.
Background
Son of a commission merchant, Curtice attended Eaton Rapids High School in Michigan and went on to the Ferris Business College in 1914 as he worked as a bookkeeper for his father.
Career
Curtice was hired as a bookkeeper for General Motors at the age of 21 and he was the 11th president of General Motors in 1952. He took over the company at a time of looming recession; but as President, he oversaw the production of the Corvette and introduced air conditioning to cars. Curtice was ahead of his time, he was innovative and was named Time magazine’s Man of the Year in 1955. He retired as President in 1958 but stayed on as a director.
Trivia
In 1959, this business guru fatally shot GM vice president Harry W. Anderson by accident. The incident occurred during a hunting trip in Canada.
