Early Life
His usage of his right hand was restricted because he had polio as a child. He went to Harvard and the University of Kansas. He sought a career as a songwriter after college.
Music
Early in the 1930s, he provided tunes for Broadway productions like "Smiles" and "The Third Little Show". During World War II, he wrote the patriotic song "Comin' In on a Wing and a Prayer”. For the Frank Sinatra movie "Higher and Higher", he gave the lyrics to the songs "A Lovely Way to Spend an Evening" and "I Couldn't Sleep a Wink Last Night." He composed the music for the hit films "A Date with Judy," “Around the World in 80 Days," and "Affair to Remember."
Honors
In 1972, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
