About Harold Holt
Harold Holt started his political career when he was 27 years old, having won an election into the Australian House of Representatives in 1935. He started out as a member of the United Australia Party but in 1945, he joined the then-newly-created Liberal Party.
Holt held several portfolios after the Liberal Party came to power in 1949 including Minister for Immigration and Minister for Labour and National Service. In 1966, he won the Australian federal elections and became the country’s Prime Minister. His term in office was cut short by his disappearance the following year.
His parents were Olive May and Thomas James Holt. He had a younger brother named Clifford. He was the nephew of Australian actress Vera Pearce. In 1946, he married Zara Dickins, his former long-time girlfriend who was a divorcee with three children as of the time of their marriage. He became an adopted father to her children.
The Harold Holt Memorial Swimming Centre was named in his honor.
