About Harold Rome
Famed composer and lyricist Harold Rome was a creative talent whose work was not only to amuse audiences through Broadway musicals but to call attention to the left-wing political slant that was present throughout the Great Depression era. The "Pins and Needles" shows brought him his greatest success.
Early Life
He began playing the piano as a young boy, and while at Hartford Public High school, he participated in numerous dance bands. He went to Trinity College and Yale University, where he studied architecture. During the Great Depression, he was unable to find employment and chose to try his luck as a musician composing material for revues.
Career
He made his Broadway debut in 1937 as co-author, composer, and lyricist of the revue "Pins and Needles." After 1108 performances, the production was a smash hit, inspiring George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart to invite him to work with them on "Sing Out the News," another topical revue, in 1938.
"Fanny" (1954) and "I Can Get It for You Wholesale" (1962) are a few other Broadway credits of his. The latter marked Barbra Streisand's Broadway debut.
Honor
He was nominated to the American Theater Hall of Fame in 1991.
