American-born screenwriter and pioneering aviator Harriet Quimby held strong the flag of women's empowerment by being the first woman in the United States to receive a pilot’s certificate in 1912.
Early Life
The screenwriter and pilot was born to Ursula Cook and William Quimby. She lived most of her life on her father's farm in 1874 till she decided to be a journalist in the 1900s.
Career Highlights
Quimby's writing career took off in 1902 when she started writing for the San Francisco Chronicle. After chalking up great success in screenwriting, Quimby became the author of many popular movies in 1911, such as "Sunshine Through the Dark", "The Blind Princess and the Poet", "The Broken Glass" and "Fisher Folks".
Death
Everything seemed to be working in Quimby's favor until 1912, when she died in a failed flight over Boston along with the organizer of the event, Charles Willard.
