Harry Belafonte was a beloved American songwriter, singer, social activist and actor who was a native of New York City. He was best noted for the song “The Banana Boat Song (Day-O)".
Career
In 1954, Belafonte starred in his first film, "Carmen Jones" and then wrote many song’s, including “The Banana Boat Song (Day-O)" and “Jamaica Farewell.”
Studying drama at the Dramatic Workshop, Belafonte worked alongside Marlon Brando, Walter Matthau and Rod Steiger.
Belafonte also supported many causes, such as the Civil Rights Movement, the anti-apartheid movement and USA for Africa.
Cause of Death
The actor’s cause of death has been attributed to heart failure.
Personal Life
Belafonte grew up in New York City, a victim of poverty and unstable family life, as a result, he was sent to Jamaica.
Belafonte was married to spouse, Pamela Frank. He fathered four children including actress Shari Belafonte.
