Early Life
Carroll taught himself how to play the piano and violin while he was in grade school. After high school, he moved to New York, where he worked as an arranger and performed in clubs and pubs.
Career
Carroll got his big break in 1912 when he was made staff composer for Winter Garden productions and he composed the theme song for the musical “On the Mississippi”. He also composed “The Trail of The Lonesome Pine”, “By the Beautiful Sea”, and “There’s a Girl in the Heart of Maryland”.
Harry Carroll was one of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) directors from 1914 to 1917. His songs sold over five million copies and was inducted into the Songwriter Hall of Fame in 1970.
