About Harry Danning
Harry Danning's ten-year MLB career earned him the moniker "Harry the Horse," as well as an eventful career that included one World Series title and four All-Star Games, to mention a few highlights. He was regarded as a terrific hitter and one of the best defensive catchers of his day.
Early Years
He attended Los Angeles High School, however he began working at the age of 13 since his father was unwell. He worked for a rug merchant after high school, lugging and hanging heavy carpets.
Career
He agreed to a $150 per month deal in 1931 with the Giants' Class-A team in Bridgeport. He made his debut for the New York Giants in 1933 and served as a reserve catcher from 1934 -1936. He finished his rookie season in the World Series.
He became the Giants' primary catcher in 1938. He was a member of the Giants squad that won the 1933 World Series and was named to the National League All-Star team (1938-1941)
He served in the US Army during World War II and retired from baseball after military service. He worked in Los Angeles in the automobile industry and as a minor league coach post retirement.
Honor
For his contribution to the sport, he was inducted into the Southern California Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 1996.
His picture was featured on the December 13, 2004 edition of Sports Illustrated magazine.
