About Harvey Ball
Harvey Ball was a renowned American artist who established a self-named advertising company in 1959. Four years later, he was hired by Hanover Insurance to create an art which would increase the morale of employees of the company. It was through this that he came up with the smiley face design which would be used by many companies across the globe.
Despite coming up with the work, the smiley design was trademarked by Murray and Bernard Spain who accompanied their design with the "Have a nice day" phrase.
Family
His parents were Christine Ross Ball and Ernest G. Ball, and grew up together with five siblings. He was married to a lady called Winifred and together they had four kids.
Education
He graduated from Worcester South High School before getting his training at the Worcester Art Museum School.
Fun Facts
Ball’s smiley has been featured in many newspapers including the France Soir.
He received only $45 after submitting his work to Hanover Insurance.
His work inspired BBC’s 2012 radio documentary titled “Smiley's People”.
