About Harvey Firestone
The American business executive, Harvey Firestone established the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company in 1900 with the purpose of supplying solid rubber side-wire tires for fire apparatus. His company went on to be a massive producer of tires for automobiles.
Family and Education
He was born to Benjamin Firestone and Catherine Flickinger. He studied at Columbia High School.
In 1895, he began a marital relationship with Idabelle Smith Firestone and together they gave birth to seven children, which included Harvey Samuel Firestone Jr, who served as the chairperson for the board of Firestone Tire and Rubber Company.
Career
After he completed high school, he worked for a while at the Columbus Buggy Company before establishing his own company. The businessman became the first person to venture into the production of a number of tires.
Association
He, together with other renowned businessmen like Henry Ford and Thomas Edison, were given the tag ”Vagabonds” owing to the sheer impact they had on American industry and business. The trio sometimes mingled with U.S. President Herbert Hoover and American writer and naturalist John Burroughs.
Honors
Firestone was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 1974.
Also, a number of institutions have been named after him, including the main library at Princeton University, which is called the Firestone Library.
Death
The American industrialist died of coronary thrombosis.
Trivia
He was the author of the 1926 book “Men and Rubber: The Story of Business”.
