About Hattie McDaniel
Hattie McDaniel was an African American actress and singer best known for her portrayal of the character Mammy in the 1939 epic-historical romance film Gone with the Wind. Her performance in the film saw her make history by becoming the first African American to win the prestigious Academy Award. She was also known for film credits such as 1936's Show Boat and 1949's Family Honeymoon.
Family Life
She was the youngest of thirteen children of her parents Susan Holbert and Henry McDaniel. She was married three times before her 1949 marriage to Larry Williams. She divorced him the following year.
Trivia
She has multiple stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Despite being married several times, she never had any children of her own.
Although in her will, she requested that her body be buried at the Hollywood Cemetery, that request could not be granted as a result of the fact that the cemetery also practiced racial segregation, which prevented black dead bodies from being buried in the same cemetery as that of white dead bodies.
