About Hazel McCallion
Hazel McCallion’s political journey began in 1964 when she unsuccessfully contested for Streetsville’s deputy reeve position. She was elected to the office in 1967 and became the reeve the following year. In 1970, she was voted as the mayor of Streetsville, and went on to serve in that position for three years.
Following the merging of Streetsville, Mississauga, and Port Credit to form the City of Mississauga in 1974, McCallion was elected as the mayor of the city four years later. She held that office for over 35 years, becoming the city’s longest serving mayor before leaving in 2014.
Two years later, she was appointed Sheridan College’s chancellor, becoming the first person to serve in that position.
Family
She’s the daughter of Amanda Maude Travers and her husband Herbert Armand Journeaux. She was married to Sam McCallion until his death in 1997. The couple were blessed with three kids.
Education
She attended Quebec High School.
Honors
The International Economic Development Council gave her the Leadership in Public Service Award in 2003. She has also received many laurels including the Order of the Rising Sun, and the Member of the Order of Canada.
Trivia
She became the third most paid Canadian mayor in 2012.
She’s one of the founders of the community newspaper known as The Streetsville Booster.
