About Hector Guimard
In a career that spanned many decades, French architect Hector Guimard produced works that made him undoubtedly one of the most prominent figures of the Art Nouveau style. He is credited with designing and building over 50 buildings and a 100 subways in Paris.
Early Life
Born in Lyon on 10 March 1867, he attended the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs in Paris for three years where he understudied the great medievalist restorer Eugene Viollet-le-Duc. The young architect then moved on to the École des Beaux-Arts to study architecture. He was so inspired after meeting Victor Horta, the Belgian Architect and designer, at his Art Nouveau hotel, Hotel Tassel in 1895 that his architectural style changed.
Career
At the age of 30, he built his first recognizable work, the Castel Béranger in Paris, a residential building of thirty six apartments. The use of brick, stone and ceramics gave the structure a refined naturalist look. Following the attention and publicity received for the Castel Béranger, Guimard soon became the toast of Paris, getting more commission for other buildings.
By January 1900, he was commissioned to build and manage entrances for the stations of the new Paris Metro. His metal art with flowing floral shapes stunned Parisians, who thought his use of iron was far too Germanic. In 1909, Guimard decided to build a hotel as a wedding gift to his new bride, Adeline Oppenheim. He completed one of his most important works, the Hotel Guimard in 1912.
Notable Projects by Hector Guimard
Between 1899 and 1900, he designed three villas; the Maison Coilliot, La Bluette and Castel Henriette.
In 1910, he built Hôtel Mezzara.
In 1913, he built Agoudas Hakehilos Synagogue
His final work – the Guimard Building at Rue Henri-Heine – was built in 1926.
Trivia
In 1903, Guimard gave up his models and manufacturing rights of the metro stations to the Metro authorities after payment.
