About Heinrich Brüning
Heinrich Brüning was one of the most controversial political figures in the 1920s and 1930s. He rose to prominence in 1924 when he was voted into the Reichstag. Six years later, President Paul von Hindenburg appointed Brüning as Germany’s Chancellor.
He became unpopular among the citizens during the Great Depression. He was faced with a high unemployment rate which led to his resignation in 1932. He also held other political positions such as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Minister of Finance.
After Resignation
With the fear of being arrested by the Nazi government, the former Chancellor fled to Switzerland in 1934, and later moved to the United Kingdom. After some period, he traveled to the United States where he started working at Harvard University as a professor.
Family
After the death of his father, Brüning spent most of his early years with his brother Hermann Joseph.
Education
After Gymnasium Paulinum, he studied at the University of Strasbourg. He also studied at the University of Bonn, and the London School of Economics.
Decoration
He was honored with the 1st and 2nd Classes of the Iron Cross.
Trivia
He was largely influenced by Friedrich Meinecke, a German historian.
Brüning was a member of the Imperial German Army during the First World War.
