About Heinrich Rudolf Hertz
Heinrich Rudolf Hertz was a German physicist best known for proving the existence of electromagnetic waves. The scientific unit of frequency, hertz, was named after him.
Early Life & Education
Hertz was born in Hamburg, Germany to Gustav and Anna. The family converted to Christianity from Judaism. He attended the Gelehrtenschule des Johanneums, where he developed an interest in science and later studied engineering under renowned scientists.
Works & Discoveries
In 1880, Hertz received his PhD and started lecturing in physics and theoretical mechanics. During that period, he conducted several experiments to prove the existence of electromagnetic waves. He also worked on other concepts like photoelectric effect and contact mechanics, where he published a paper “On the Contact of Elastic Solids.”
Death & Legacy
Hertz was diagnosed with cancer and spent his later years teaching and researching. He released “The Principles of Mechanics” a few weeks before his death. He is regarded as one of the world’s best scientists.
