Heinz Rühmann, a versatile German actor who appeared in over 100 movies over the course of a seven-decade career, was named the most popular actor in his native country multiple times.
Career
In 1925, he began acting with the Munich Kammerspiele Theater Company. In spite of making his feature film debut in "The German Mother Heart" (1926), he didn't become a star until he appeared in "Three From the Gas Station" (1930). He made his directorial debut with Lauter Lügen in 1938 and went on to helm five more films over the next two decades.
He started his own film firm, Comedie, which failed. "Ship of Fools" (1964) and "The Captain from Köpenick" are some of his other works. The 1993 work "Faraway, So Close" marked his last on-screen appearance. In the film, which was directed by Wim Wenders, Ruhmann starred alongside Otto Sander, Bruno Ganz, and Peter Falk.

He was married three times.
Awards
He received numerous awards, including the 1992 Magdeburger Otto for Lifetime Achievement.
