About Helen Clark
Helen Clark entered mainstream politics in 1981 when she was voted into New Zealand’s Parliament to represent the people of Mount Albert. Known for her time with the Labour Party, Clark was chosen to serve as the country’s Minister of Health in 1989.
That same year, she was made the deputy leader of her party, which qualified her to become the deputy premier of the country. In 1993, she defeated Mike Moore to become the Labour Party’s leader. Six years later, she became New Zealand’s Prime Minister and served in that position until 2008.
After leaving office, she joined the United Nations Development Programme where she worked as the administrator.
Family
She was raised by her parents George Clark and Margaret McMurray alongside her three sisters. She and Peter Davis, a sociologist, became a wedded couple in 1981.
Alma mater
After completing Epsom Girls' Grammar School, she enrolled at the University of Auckland where she read politics.
Decorations
She has been the recipient of many awards which include the New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal, the Nuclear-Free Future Award, and the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun.
Trivia
The Helen Clark Foundation, a policy think-tank, appointed her as its patron in 2019.
Three years before that, she contested for the secretary-general position of the United Nations but she lost.
Before politics, she was a lecturer and taught at her alma mater.
