About Helen Gurley Brown
She was popularly known for her profession as an American author and publisher. She also served as an editor-in-chief for the Cosmopolitan magazine for a number of years.
She was the daughter of Cleo Fred and Ira Marvin Gurley. Tragedy struck when at the age of 10 she lost her dad to an elevator accident; thus, she was brought up by her mother. She attended schools at John H. Francis Polytechnic High School and Woodbury Business College.
She exchanged wedding vows with David Brown.
“Having It All” and Other Books
Helen Gurley Brown worked as a secretary for Foote, Cone & Belding advertising agency. She was recognized for her good writing skills thus gaining promotion to the copywriting department.
As an author, she published the book “Sex and the Single Girl” in 1962. The book was initially rejected by a lot of publishers because of its title but it was finally accepted by Bernard J. Geis. The book was published in about 28 countries, and in a few weeks later, over two million copies of the books were sold. Her other published books include “Sex and the Office”, “The Late Show: A Semi Wild but Practical Guide for Women Over 50” and “Outrageous Opinions of Helen Gurley Brown”. The latter was published in 1967.
In 1982, she published a book titled “Having It All”. It’s been noted that topics from her magazines and books were mostly about how women can achieve anything they set their minds on.

Before she died, she built the Brown Institute of Media Innovation. The institution can be found in the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
Awards
She was awarded a Matrix Award from New York Women in Communication in 1985. Brown was also the recipient of the Woman Achievement Award from the Women’s Project Theater in 2013.
Death
She was admitted to the New York Presbyterian Hospital where she breathed her last in August 2012 at age 90.
