From 2000-2010, she was employed at Hearst Newspapers as a journalist. As a writer, Thomas published six books. Her books include “Listen Up Mr. President: Everything You Always Wanted Your President to Know and Do” in 2009 and “Thanks for the Memories, Mr. President: Wit and Wisdom from the Front Row at the White House” in 2003. She was the Women's National Press Club’s president for a year.

She was educated at Eastern High School and Wayne University.

She was the child of George Thomas and Mary Rowady. She had nine siblings. In 1971, she got married to Douglas B. Cornell.

She won several accolades including the Columbia University Journalism Award in 1985, the National Press Club Fourth Estate Award in 1984, and the Al Neuharth Award for Excellence in the Media in 1991.
