About Hélio Gracie
Hélio Gracie’s role in developing martial arts in Brazil cannot be overlooked. He is widely regarded as one of the founders of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, hence the nickname “the Godfather”.
He started his career in the combat sport at the age of 18 when he challenged Antonio Portugal, a boxer, in a "jiu-jitsu vs. boxing" match. He went on to fight against many prominent names such as Japanese Masahiko Kimura, and Valdemar Santana. He held a 10th degree red belt before leaving the sport.
Family
His brothers Carlos, Gastao Jr, Oswaldo, and George Gracie are all considered pioneers of mixed martial art in Brazil.
He was married to Margarida, and after her death he married a lady called Vera. His descendants have also established themselves in the mixed martial arts sport. Some of his children are Rorion Gracie, Rickson Gracie, and Royler Gracie
Achievements
In 1997, the Black Belt Magazine named him “Man of the Year”.
Trivia
He started his judo training at the age of 16 years.
He fought against Fred Ebert, a professional wrestler, in 1932.
