About Helmut Schmidt
In 1946, German politician Helmut Schmidt became a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany where he would spend the rest of his political career. The following year, he was named as the leader of the party’s student wing known as the Socialist German Student League.
In 1953, after completing his university education, he was selected into the German Bundestag. Between 1961 and 1965, he served as the Innensenator of the city of Hamburg. Under the Willy Brandt administration, he worked as the Minister for Finance, and Minister for Defence.
He was elected as West Germany’s Chancellor in 1974 and served in that position until 1982. He would be remembered for his role in the 1979 NATO Double-Track Decision, and the creation of the European Monetary System.
Family
His parents Gustav Ludwig Schmidt and Ludovica Koch were both teachers. He grew up alongside a brother. His wife Hannelore Glaser died in 2010. They had two kids named Susanne and Helmut Walter. He was in a relationship with Ruth Loah.
Education
After his education at Hamburg Lichtwark School, Schmidt enrolled at the University of Hamburg.
Honors
He was decorated with many accolades including the Henry Kissinger Prize, the Four Freedoms Award, and the Carlo Schmid-Prize. He also received the Grand Cross Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
Trivia
A non-partisan organization called the Bundeskanzler-Helmut-Schmidt-Stiftung was formed in the Bundestag in his honor.
He was crucial in the formation of the European Central Bank.
