About Hendrik Lorentz
Hendrik A. Lorentz was a renowned Dutch physicist best remembered for winning the 1902 Nobel Prize in Physics with Pieter Zeeman. He etched his name in history for his extensive research into the theory of electromagnetic radiation.
Early Life
Coming from a well-to-do family, his father, Gerrit Frederik Lorentz, worked as a horticulturist and his mother, Geertruida van Ginkel was a homemaker.
Although Lorentz grew up in a very religious household, he was a freethinker.
He would later attend Leiden University where he studied and graduated with a degree in mathematics and physics.
Career as a Professor at Leiden
At a very young age of 24, Lorentz became a professor of theoretical physics at Leiden University. His main interest was the electromagnetic theory of electricity, magnetism, and light for close to twenty years.
He was a major contributor with regard to identifying ranges from hydrodynamics to general relativity. Lorentz’s contributions extend from the spaces of electromagnetism to the study of the theory of relativity.
Works and Achievements
Lorentz’s works included unfolding the phenomenon of electromagnetism which is to understand the propagation of light in reference frames that move relative to postulated luminiferous aether.
In this research, he uncovered that the move from one frame to another could be made easier by using a new time variable that he called local time.
One of his notable works was in 1896, when his research on electron theory explained Pieter Zeeman’s discovery of spectral lines corresponding differently to wavelengths that are split up into several lines controlled by a magnet.
