About Henry Dunant
Henry Dunant was a renowned Swiss businessman and humanitarian who, in 1863, co-founded the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). He conceived the idea of creating the committee after witnessing the infamous Battle of Solferino in 1859.
His experience during the war inspired him to publish a book entitled “A Memory of Solferino”. Dunant was also influential in the development of the Geneva Conventions.
Family
At birth, he was named Jean-Henri Dunant and was the son of Antoinette Dunant-Colladon and her husband Jean-Jacques Dunant. He had a wife called Susanna.
Education
He attended the Collège de Genève.
Recognition
For his role in the establishment of the ICRC, Dunant received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1901.
Trivia
As a writer, he published his first book in 1858 which was entitled “Notice sur la Régence de Tunis (An Account of the Regency in Tunis)”.
He briefly worked with Lullin et Sautter, a money-changing company.
He established the Swiss wing of the Christian group known as the Young Men's Christian Association.
