About Henry Heimlich
Henry Judah Heimlich, was one of the most famous and renowned American thoracic surgeons and medical researchers during his lifetime. He invented the “Heimlich maneuver” – an anti-choking technique of abdominal thrusts that has been credited for saving over 100,000 lives globally.
Background & Education
He was born in Wilmington, Delaware. In 1937, he graduated from the New Rochelle High School in New York. He then obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from Cornell University in 1941. In 1943, Henry earned his medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College.
Major Inventions
In 1962, he invented the “Flutter Valve” also called the “Heimlich Chest Drain Valve”. The valve’s design allows blood and air to escape from the chest cavity during a gunshot trauma, allowing collapsed lungs to re-expand. The Heimlich Valve was credited with saving the lives of over 100 American soldiers during the Vietnam War.
He first officially described his ground-breaking anti-choking innovation, “Heimlich maneuver” in 1975. Since then, the technique has become a national safety trademark, having been taught in schools, shown in films, printed on restaurant posters, endorsed and supported by medical authorities.
Death
The surgeon died of a heart attack at age 96 in The Christ Hospital, Ohio on December 17, 2016.
