About Henry III of France
Henry III of France was a French monarch who served as King of France from 1574 to 1589. Prior to ascending the throne, he had been the Grand Duke of Lithuania and the King of Poland from 1573 to 1575. He gave up the latter throne after his brother, Charles IX died without a child to succeed him. His reign was marred by the Wars of Religion, mainly spearheaded by the Catholics who sought to suppress Protestantism. His inability to produce a direct heir also made the situation worse.
Family Life
His father was King Henry II and his mother was Catherine de' Medici. He had three older brothers: Francis II of France, Charles IX of France and Louis of Valois. He was married to Louise of Lorraine.
Death
He was stabbed to death by Jacques Clement, a Dominican friar who had approached him under the pretext of delivering a secret message on August 1, 1589.
