About Henry Knox
Henry Knox joined the army in 1775 during the Battles of Lexington and Concord. He went on to command the American soldiers during the infamous Battle of Bunker Hill which impressed then army officer General George Washington.
During the American Revolutionary War, he advised Washington on artillery issues which played a huge role in conquering the British. With the Continental Army, he was placed in charge of weapons. He was also credited for masterminding the creation of The Society of the Cincinnati.
Political career
Knox entered into politics after the war. After George Washington was elected as the President of the United States, he was named as the country’s Secretary of War becoming the first person to hold that position. He served in that position for five years starting from 1789.
Family
He was born to Mary Campbell and William Knox. He had three children with Lucy Flucker whom he married in 1774.
Education
He studied at Boston Latin School.
Honors
In 1791, Knox became a member of the American Philosophical Society. Due to his contribution to the fight for independence, a number of cities and towns in the United States have been named after him.
Other Facts
In the 1986 film “George Washington II: The Forging of a Nation”, his character was played by Farnham Scott.
The United States Postal Service has used his image on their 8¢ postage stamp.
