About Henry Morton Stanley
Sir. Henry Morton Stanley was a famous British American explorer, soldier, colonial administrator, politician, and journalist.
Background & Early Life
His birth name was John Rowlands, and he was from Denbigh, Wales. He adopted the name Stanley from a wealthy New Orleans merchant, Henry Stanley. He worked as a freelance journalist and served as a soldier in the Confederate Army, Union Navy, and Union Army during the Civil war.
Dr. Livingstone Adventure
In 1869, the New York Herald asked Stanley to embark on a mission to Africa searching for the famous explorer and missionary David Livingstone. Unfortunately, Livingstone had not returned since leaving for Africa in 1866, searching for the River Nile's source.
Fortunately, Stanley found him ill at Lake Tanganyika in November 1871. Stanley's publications on his African adventures made him famous at the time.
Exploration of Africa
After Dr. Livingstone died, the Herald paper sponsored Stanley in 1873 to continue explorations in Africa. So he explored the region so well that he became very familiar with the people of the Congo region.
Funded by Belgium's King Leopold II, Stanley returned with troops to Africa in 1879. This time, he was ruthless. He conquered the region and generalized forced labor to create lower Congo and the construction of its roads. His efforts birthed the "Congo Free State."
