About Henry Timrod
Henry Timrod was a famous American poet who offered historians and readers a priceless view into the intellectual history and culture of the American South during the American Civil War. He was one of the few truly accomplished literary personalities to compose in the Confederate States of America.
His Life
After leaving the University of Georgia due to illness, he worked for a lawyer. He worked as a tutor and a poet for a while, submitting several poems to The Southern Literary Messenger under the alias Aglaus.
He accepted a position as a teacher at Col. William Henry Cannon's plantation in 1856, which is where he first met Katie Godwin, his future wife. "A Vision of Poesy" was one of his best-known poems.
He enlisted in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War but was medically discharged. Later, he penned war poems as an editor and joint proprietor of the South Carolinian. "Ethnogenesis" was his first poetry from this time. However, after the city was set on fire by Union soldiers, he lived in poverty, and eventually succumbed to tuberculosis.

Famous Victorian Age poet Alfred Lord Tennyson referred to him as “The Poet Laureate of the Confederacy”.
