About Herbert Marcuse
Herbert Marcuse was a German-born American philosopher, political theorist, and sociologist who worked at the Office of Strategic Services from 1943 to 1950. He also made lots of followers for his stance against the ideologies of the Soviet Union’s Communist Party.
In most of his works, he criticized modern technology, entertainment culture, and capitalism and described them as “new forms of social control”.
As an author
Marcuse shared his thoughts through his numerous books. In his 1958 book titled “Soviet Marxism: A Critical Analysis”, he criticized the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. His other popular literature were titled “One-Dimensional Man” and “Eros and Civilization”.
Family
He was born to Gertrud Kreslawsky and Carl Marcuse. He married Sophie Wertheim in 1924 until her death in 1951. Their son is Peter Marcuse, a renowned lawyer.
He later married Inge Neumann before tying the knot with Erica Sherover in 1976.
Education
He studied at Humboldt University, Berlin before moving to the University of Freiburg. Marcuse later enrolled at the University of Freiburg where he had his PhD certificate.
