About Herman Van Rompuy
Herman Van Rompuy was named the national chairman of the youth wing of the Christian People's Party in 1973 while working with the Central Bank of Belgium. Two years later, he was given a ministerial appointment and served under Gaston Geens and Leo Tindemans.
Between 1993 and 1999, The Belgian politician served as the Minister of Budget. After serving in other positions in government, he was made the Prime Minister of the country in 2008. His administration would be remembered for the €250 million deal the country signed with GDF Suez in 2009.
After leaving office that same year, he was appointed the President of the European Council, becoming the first person to occupy that position on a full-time basis.
Family
He’s the son of Belgian economist Victor Lodewijk Maurits van Rompuy and Germaine Geens. He has a sister called Tine Van Rompuy, who’s a nurse and politician. Van Rompuy and Geertrui Windels have four kids namely Thomas, Laura, Peter, and Elke.
Education
He studied at Sint-Jan Berchmanscollege before enrolling at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven where he studied philosophy.
Trivia
He has also worked as a lecturer and has taught in schools like Vlaamse Economische Hogeschool Brussel, and the Handelshogeschool Antwerpen.
