About Hermann von Helmholtz
German scientist Hermann von Helmholtz was prominent for his research in the fields of physics, physiology and psychology. The sub-categories of the scientific fields he worked on include mechanics, ophthalmic optics, sensory physiology, acoustics and aesthetics, nerve physiology and electromagnetism.
He taught at the University of Konigsberg as an associate professor of physiology, the University of Bonn as a professor of anatomy and physiology and the Humboldt University as a professor of physics. Germany’s largest scientific association, the Helmholtz Association was named after him.
Family Life
His father, Ferdinand Helmholtz was a headmaster of a local gymnasium. In 1861, he married his second wife, Anna von Mohl, a salon hostess and a writer who translated scientific works. He had three children.
Achievements
He was honored with the Matteucci Medal, the Faraday Lectureship Prize and the Albert Medal.
