About Honoré Daumier
Honore Daumier, originally named Honore-Victorin Daumier, was a renowned 19th-century French painter, printmaker and sculptor. He was best known for creating artworks that offered commentaries on France's political and social living, thus, from the 1830 French revolution to the demise of the 2nd “Napoleonic Empire” in the 1870s.
Background & Early Life
He was born in Marseille, France. In 1820, at age 12, he worked as an errand boy and messenger for a judicial officer in France. He later worked in a bookshop at the “Palais-Royal”. Then in 1822, he trained under famous French artist Alexander Lenoir. He enrolled at Academie Suisse the following year and learned drawing and arts.
Career & Major Works
Throughout his career, he earned a living by producing caricatures, drawing cartoonish portraits of politicians and satirizing the actions of his fellow citizens in newspapers and journals.
He was an avid French republican democrat who opposed the bourgeoisie, attorneys and judicial system, politicians, the monarchy and the church. However, after publishing “Gargantua”, an extremely controversial and discourteous portrait of King Louis-Philippe, he was imprisoned for many months in 1832.
Daumier was a prolific artist who created over 1500 paintings and drawings and over 5000 wood engravings and lithographs.
Death
He died at age 70 from a paralytic stroke on February 10, 1879.
