Horace is the name by which the English-speaking world refers to the famous Roman lyric poet, Quintus Horatius Flaccus. He was active when Rome transitioned to an empire from a republic and during the reign of the first emperor, Caesar Augustus. Besides his lyric poetry, which was written in Latin, he was also known for being a spokesperson for the Empire.
He had previously served in the defunct Roman Republic’s army. His notable works include “The Art of Poetry” and “Odes”.
His father was mentioned in his writings, through which he heaped praises on him for overseeing his moral development and education.
He died aged 56 on 27 November 8 BC.
