About Horace Greeley
Horace Greeley rose from humble beginnings in New Hampshire to become one of the most influential men in journalism in New York City in the 19th century. He served as a printer’s apprentice in Vermont before eventually relocating to New York in 1831. While there, he started writing and editing pieces published in different newspapers.
In 1841, he launched the New York Tribune newspaper, for which he also served as an editor. He represented New York’s 6th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives for 3 months and lost in his bid to become the President of the U.S. in 1872.
Family Life
His parents Mary Woodburn and Zaccheus Greely were poor farmers. He was married to schoolteacher and suffragist Mary Cheney, who predeceased him by just one month.
Death
He died aged 61 on November 29, 1872.
