About Horst Wessel
Horst was a leading member of Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Party stormtroopers, who were also known as the Sturmabteilung (SA).
Education
His parents were Bertha Luise Margaret and Wilhelm Ludwig Georg Wessel, both of whom were devout Lutherans. He was raised with two siblings – Paula Margarethe and Werner Georg Eric Ludwig. Horst studied in a number of schools including Luisenstädtisches Gymnasium and Friedrich Wilheim University where he read law.
Associations & Campaigns
To advance Nazi’s cause, he joined several groups including the Viking League and then became the leader of SA-Sturm 5 in 1929. He even founded his own group called Knappschaft to this effect
He wrote the famous Horst Wessel song “Fahne Hoch”, and then led various street campaigns such as the Fishcherkiez incursions during which the Communist party pronounced a “find-and-strike” action against the Nazis.
Death
Horst was shot in the head at his apartment on January 14 1930. He was then rushed to the hospital, where he, aged 22, died about a month later. The communist, Hohler was sentenced to six years for the murder but the Nazi took him out of jail and executed him in 1933. Following his death, Joseph Goebbels, one of the senior officials of the Nazi Party and chief propagandist, turned Wessel into a martyr in order to advance the sick and twisted ideology of the Nazi Party.
