The former pro golfer left an indelible mark in the history of American golf. With 32 PGA Tour wins, he was considered one of the best putters. He was an inductee of both World Golf and Michigan Golf Halls of Fame.
Background
Born in Springfield, Missouri, he developed a passion for golf from age 12 and started training in the sport. He graduated from the State Teachers College in Springfield.
Career Highlights
He debuted his pro career at the Oklahoma Open, winning the tournament 2 years later. The following year, he scored 8 more wins. He emerged the 1934 winner of the inaugural Masters Tournament held in Georgia and bagged more victories 2 years later. From 1929 to 1937, he suited up for 5 Ryder Cup teams and was never defeated. A gold tournament regularly held at the Detroit Club was named in his honor.
Personal Life
He developed a damaged lung from cancer and eventually died of Hodgkin’s disease in 1963. He was 55.
