About Howard H. Aiken
Howard H. Aiken, full name Howard Hathaway Aiken, was a brilliant 20th-century mathematician and electrical engineer. He was widely celebrated for inventing the "Havard Mark I" – one of the earliest machines for arithmetic calculations.
Education
Aiken was an alumnus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In addition, he held a Ph.D. in physics from Harvard University.
Inventions & Scientific Contributions
Aiken's idea of building a digitally programmed calculator machine was conceived during his Ph.D. when he encountered many time-consuming calculations. He began to work on the device in 1939 with the help of three other brilliant engineers – F.E. Hamilton, B.M. Durfee, and Clark D. Lake. With funding and engineering works from "IBM," the calculator was completed and installed at Harvard University in February 1944.
He later designed three other calculators, Mark IV, III, and II. He also made several pioneering software applications for data processing, including "billing," and helped to develop computer teaching programs in the university in what is now known as computer science. In addition, he wrote many articles on data.
