About Hugh Carey
Hugh Carey served as an American politician who was elected as a representative from New York to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1961. After more than a decade on Capitol Hill, the New Yorker was elected as the 51st Governor of New York.
Family and Education
He was born to Dennis Joseph Carey and Margaret Collins. His siblings included Martin T. Carey, who was known to have established the Winfield Hall. Carey studied to be a lawyer at St. John’s University School of Law.
In 1947, the American politician tied the wedding knot with Helen Owen and had 15 children with her. One of his children, Paul Carey, served as a Special Assistant to U.S. President Bill Clinton. Paul also served as the 77th Commissioner of the stock market regulator, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Unfortunately for Carey, he lost his wife to breast cancer in 1974 and a few years later, he married Evangeline Gouletas. His second marriage ended in divorce in 1989.
Early Career
Carey joined the New York National Guard and served in the 101st Cavalry. He also served in the 415th Infantry Regiment and the 104th Infantry Division. He earned the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Clusters during his service and after the Second World War ended, he was discharged with the rank of a colonel.
Political Career
His political career began in 1960, and as a member of the Democratic Party, he won a seat in the United States House of Representatives, representing New York. The politician held the position from 1961 to 1974.
After his service at the U.S. House of Representatives, he contested for the state election that same year and he won the mandate of state and became the 51st Governor of New York. During his tenure of office, he helped to revive the economy of New York City and he was able to achieve these through the reduction of corporate taxes and he established a few buildings like the Battery Park City and Javits Convention Center.
Other positions he held in government included, the chairperson of the United States House Committee on Education and Labor.
Achievement
Hugh Carey received the University at Albany Foundation’s Citizen Laureate Award in 2009.
Trivia
After graduating from law school, he received an admission into the New York state bar. He then went on to become a partner in New York-based law firm called Finley, Kumble, Wagner, Underberg, Manley, Myerson & Casey.
