Harris was born in a small town in Alabama in 1909. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1931 as an airborne officer.
Career
Harris served in various capacities setting up airborne units, including the 13th Airborne Division during the Second World War. He also commanded the 40th Infantry Division during the Korean War. He served as the Commanding General of the Seventh United States Army and retired in 1965 as the Commanding Officer of the U.S. Continental Army Command.
He was honored with various awards, including the Army Distinguished Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, and Glider Badge. Upon retirement, he served as the President of the Citadel from 1956 to 1970.
Death
Harris died in 1979 at the age of 70.
