About Hugo Grotius
Hugo Grotius was a highly-rated Dutch scholar who has been considered as one of the pioneers of international law. He also contributed to the study of philosophy, especially in the field of political theory. His books titled “Mare Liberum” and “De jure belli ac pacis” have been considered as one of the most used literature in the study of international law.
Grotius was also a lawyer, theologian and poet. His role in resolving the feud between the Calvinists and the Remonstrants made him one of the most admired theologians during the 17th Century.
Family
He was born to Alida van Overschie and Jan de Groot. He became the husband of Maria van Reigersberch in 1608. The couple was blessed with seven kids.
Education
The famous scholar was a product of Leiden University.
Facts
Many historians have shared the opinion that he was influenced by Jean Bodin and Francisco de Vitoria.
As a playwright, his works became famous during World War I.
