About Hugo Pratt
Hugo Pratt, originally called Ugo Eugenio Prat, was a famed 20th-century Italian writer and comic book creator. He was acclaimed for his distinctive style of combining storytelling and historical research to produce fantastic writing works.
Background & Early Years
He was born in Rimini, Italy. However, he lived in Venice for most of his childhood. Developing a passion for entertainment and writing, he joined the “Venice Group” in the 1940s. In 1945, the group launched “Albo Uragano,” – a successful magazine focused on adventurous comics. Pratt’s eponymous comic character “Asso di Picchu” also earned acclaim in Argentina in 1945.
Career Highlights & Major Works
In the 1940s, he lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and often embarked on travels to several South American destinations like the Mato Grosso and Amazon. He wrote his earliest comic book “Anna Della jungle” during that period. He then wrote many other comic books, including “Wheeling” and “Capitan Cormorant.”
Between 1959 and 1960, he lived in London, publishing various series of war comic illustrations for “Fleetway Publications.” In the late 1960s, he collaborated with fellow comic writer Florenzo Ivaldi to produce “Una ballata del mare salato,” the comic story which revealed Pratt’s famous character, “Corto Maltese.”
In 2005, he was admitted into the “Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame.”
Cause of Death
The writer died of bowel cancer at age 68 on August 20, 1995.
