About Igal Roodenko
Civil rights campaigner Igal Roodenko established himself as one of the key members in the history of the American pacifist organization known as the War Resisters League (WSL). After refusing to join the military during the Second World War, Roodenko joined the league in 1947 and was made its chairman in 1968.
During the early stages of the war, he was arrested and imprisoned for failing to undertake a Civilian Public Service. In 1964, he, alongside other inmates, embarked on a hunger strike before he was released the following year.
Due to his allegiance with WSL, Roodenko was against America’s involvement in WWII and embarked on many protests which led to his arrests. He also protested against all forms of discriminations.
Private Life
He was raised by his parents Morris and Ida alongside a sister. He was said to be gay. He had a niece named Amy Zowniriw.
Education
He moved to Cornell University after completing his education at Townsend Harris High School.
Honors
In 1979, the War Resisters League honored him with the Peace Award.
Trivia
He was also a member of the ‘Men of all Colors Together’ group.
At a very young age, he became a vegetarian.
Before rising to fame he worked as a printer.
