About Igor Sikorsky
Igor Sikorsky’s aircraft manufacturing business began flourishing during the First World War. Throughout that period, he usually designed bombers for the army. The Russian-born American aviator gained international recognition in 1910 when he flew his second fixed-wing airplane. He was celebrated for becoming one of the pioneers in the manufacturing of fixed-wing aircrafts and the modern-day helicopter.
As a businessman
Sikorsky established his name in the aviation industry in 1923 when he founded the aircraft manufacturing company known as Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation. The organization made history in the 1930s when they built the first cross-ocean flying boats for the Pan American Airways Company.
Family
His dad, Ivan Alexeevich Sikorsky, worked as a university professor while his mum, Mariya Stefanovna Sikorskaya, served as a physician. He had four elderly siblings.
He had a daughter with Olga Fyodorovna Simkovitch called Tania. In 1924, he wedded Elisabeth Semion with whom he had four children namely George, Sergei, Nikolai, and Igor Jr.
Education
He was a graduate of Kyiv Polytechnic Institute’s Mechanical College. He also studied at ETACA.
Decorations
He won the National Medal of Science in 1967 and the John Fritz Medal the following year. He went on to win many prizes including the Daniel Guggenheim Medal, and the Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy.
Trivia
Sikorsky made his mark in the aviation world when he manufactured and flew America’s first viable helicopter named Vought-Sikorsky VS-300.
He was inspired by Ferdinand von Zeppelin, and the Wright Brothers.
