The Norwegian composer, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Ihsahn is famous for playing in the Norwegian black metal band Emperor. Born Vegard Sverre Tveitan, Ihsahn is known for his adoption of a variety of music styles such as classical music, industrial and progressive metal.
Ihsahn has claimed he believes in Satanism and social Darwinism. He is also a proponent of meditation and environmental protection. He has lent his support to fighting against crime and religious intolerance.
Ihsahn played guitar and keyboard in his friend Samoth’s band Xerasia in 1990. The band was renamed Embryonic, and after recording the demo “The Land of The Lost Souls”, they renamed the band once more as Thou Shalt Suffer.
He left with Samoth to start a new band called Emperor, which released demos and the EP “Emperor” in 1993. The band had support from the black metal artist Euronymous.
Ihsahn composed “Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk” alone after some members of the band were imprisoned.
He formed another band Peccatum with his wife Heidi in 1998. The band released the album “Amor Fati” in 2001.
The Emperor reunited to record the studio album “IX Equilibrium” in 1999. Two years later, in 2001, the band released the album “Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire and Demise”.
After the band Emperor was dissolved on mutual grounds, Ihsahn recorded his first solo album “The Adversary” in 2002.
He continued to release more solo albums featuring his wife and other artists. He has had live performances, some of them with former Emperor members.
